Outcomes following thoracic surgery: the role of preoperative chlorhexidine mouthwash in the prevention of post-operative pneumonia

چکیده
Postoperative pneumonia is a frequent and serious complication of the surgery. It poses a real risk of leading an otherwise successful surgery to a life threatening state. The postoperative pneumonia also leads to an increased morbidity and prolonged length of hospital stay and costs. 1,2 For these reasons, the emphasis lies in the prevention of the post-operative pneumonia. Prophylactic approaches could be both non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic. Oral defences’s and hygiene help prevent pneumonia in the healthy individuals. 3 However an invasive anaesthesia and the operations increase the risk of the chest infection by disturbing the oral defences’s. One simple approach to reduce the incidence of the post-operative pneumonia has been use of an oral chlorhexidine in the intensive care units with promising results4. Its role in the pre-operative period to disinfect the oral cavity thereby reducing the postoperative pneumonia incidence has not been formally investigated. This study compares the outcomes in the patients ABSTRACT

Comparing the Effects of Orthodentol and Chlorhexidine Mouthwash on Prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in Patients of Intensive Care Unit: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
Background and Aim: Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a common, serious and costly complication in patients of intensive care units. Oral hygiene is one of the important clinical measures to reduce the amount of pulmonary infection in these patients. Therefore, this study compares the effects of chlorhexidine and orthodontal mouthwashes on prevention of pulmonary infection in patients with end...

متن کاملHypoalbuminemia as a Predictor for Complications Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Background and purpose: There is little information about the prognostic role of preoperative serum albumin levels in postoperative outcomes following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of this study was to evaluate preoperative hypoalbuminemia as a predictor for complications after CABG. Materials and methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in 200 patients und...
متن کاملComparison of the right internal thoracic artery and radial artery as a second arterial conduit in ‘Y’ composite fashion in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting using total arterial revascularization
Introduction: The use of two arterial conduits for CABG is rapidly increasing. The second arterial conduit to LITA is usually RITA or radial artery. We sought to compare outcomes when either RITA or radial artery is exclusively used as a Y composite graft to LITA for total arterial revascularization. Material and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 231 ...
